Dhanbad: A major tragedy has struck the BCCL Munidih Coal Washery in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Four laborers have died after being buried under coal slurry. The deceased have been identified as Manik Bauri, Dinesh Bauri, Deepak Bauri, and Maira Gop.

When Did the Accident Occur?

The major accident took place around 5:00 PM on Saturday at the BCCL Coal Washery Project, which operates within the jurisdiction of the Munidih Outpost (OP). Several contract laborers were buried when a mass of slurry (coal powder) suddenly collapsed while they were engaged in loading it into a truck.

Are Rescue and Relief Operations Underway?

Chaos ensued at the site immediately following the incident. Rescue and relief operations were promptly initiated. The bodies of the four laborers were recovered after clearing away the slurry. With the aid of a JCB machine, debris is currently being removed to ascertain whether any other laborers remain trapped beneath the rubble.

Immediately after the incident, the washery premises were gripped by panic and cries of distress. Local police, CISF personnel, and a large number of villagers rushed to the scene and commenced relief operations. Using JCB machines to clear the massive quantity of slurry, the four bodies were successfully recovered. The administration is currently conducting a thorough check to determine if any other laborers are trapped within the debris. There is a possibility that additional bodies may still be found within the rubble.

Were Questions Raised Over Safety?

As news of the accident spread, intense outrage erupted among the families of the deceased and local laborers. An atmosphere of tension and mourning currently prevails across the entire Munidih region. The laborers allege that the accident occurred due to a blatant disregard for safety standards. Questions are being raised regarding the operational protocols of both the BCCL management and the contracting company, specifically asking why adequate safety measures were not in place during the loading process.

What About Rescue Efforts?

Currently, the local police and administration are focused on bringing the situation under control and conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. This incident has once again raised serious concerns regarding the safety of laborers working in Dhanbad's coal mines and washeries. Munidih OP In-charge Manita Kumari stated that the bodies of four laborers have been recovered. Rescue operations are proceeding rapidly to extricate the remaining trapped workers. Teams from the local administration, the NDRF, and BCCL are present at the site. The administration has initiated an investigation into the accident. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred due to a sudden surge of slurry within the washery or a leak in a tank or pipeline.
