Ahmedabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 4 out of 15 municipal corporations of Gujarat. The party has got success in cities like Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad and Vapi, where elections were held for the first time after the upgrade. Apart from this, BJP is also maintaining a strong lead in the remaining 11 municipal corporations.
The difference between village and city was clearly visible. A little fewer number of people turned out in the cities, there was about 50 to 55 percent voting. But the scene in the villages was different, there more than 65 percent people voted. On top of that, it was extremely hot, but people still stood in queues in the sun. The enthusiasm of the villagers was indicating that this time the matter would be interesting.
All three parties had exerted their full strength. Initial trends show BJP leading but the counting is not over yet and a lot can change. Congress is busy saving its old strongholds and AAP has worked hard in new areas this time. Their workers have also been sitting in their offices since morning and counting every seat.
Even before the elections, hundreds of BJP candidates had won unopposed, giving the party an initial lead. Due to this the opposition had also raised questions on the election process.
Voting was relatively low in urban areas, while higher participation was seen in rural areas. This difference is being considered an important signal for political analysts.
Experts believe that the results of local body elections may indicate the upcoming assembly elections. Current trends show that BJP's hold still remains strong, due to which the path ahead may be challenging for the opposition.
The trends that came till 12:48 pm amid the counting of votes for the municipal corporation elections have made the picture clear to a great extent. In the trends of 75 seats out of 192, BJP is leading on 67 seats, while Congress seems to be limited to only 8 seats. Only the initial figures seem to be deciding the direction of the contest. In the trends so far, BJP's lead is quite strong. The way the party has taken an initial lead on most of the seats is a clear indication that the contest seems to be one-sided at the moment. The effect of organization and vote management is also visible in these figures.
