Hormuz Reopening Offer Falls Flat: Trump Questions Iran’s Phased Peace Plan (Image X @theskindoctor13)
Washington: Tension is already high in the Middle East and now peace talks between America and Iran seem to be stuck once again. According to reports, US President Donald Trump is not happy with Iran's new proposal. He says that America's biggest concern i.e. Iran's nuclear program, is missing from the beginning in this proposal.
Iran has put forward a phased proposal to end this deadlock. The first phase involves a ceasefire and a guarantee of not attacking again. In the second phase, there is a demand to remove the sea blockade and open important shipping routes. And in the third i.e. the last phase, talks have been suggested on controversial issues like nuclear program and uranium enrichment.
America clearly says that no talk can be done by keeping the nuclear issue aside. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also reiterated that any agreement is possible only if it is ensured that Iran cannot make nuclear weapons. It is not acceptable to America to separate this issue from the rest of the talks.
Diplomatic efforts have suffered a setback due to the latest deadlock. The proposed talks to be held in Islamabad have also been postponed. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is visiting different countries to garner support while America is firm on its stance.
The situation regarding the Strait of Hormuz has become more serious. It is one of the most important oil supply routes in the world, through which a large part of the world imports oil. Due to reduced movement of ships here, oil prices have increased and this has had a direct impact on the global markets.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz raised questions on America's strategy and said that it is easy to start a war but very difficult to get out of it. French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barro held all parties responsible and said the crisis challenged international law and global stability.
At present the differences between the two countries remain deep. On one hand Iran is adamant on its conditions and on the other hand America is not ready to step back from its main issue. In such a situation, it is difficult to say whether any concrete solution will emerge in the near future. The world is just watching whether someone takes a step back or not.
