New Delhi: In Hindu tradition, married woman observe various fast for their husband's long life, happiness, prosperity and marital bliss. One of these is the Vat Savitri fast, which is considered a special fast for good fortune. The Vat Savitri fast is observed on the new moon day of the Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha.

When is Vat Savitri fast?

According to the Hindu calendar, Vat Savitri fast is observed every year on the new moon day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Jyeshtha. Vat Savitri Vrat is also known as Badmavas and Bargadahi.

On this day, married women observe a waterless fast, praying for their husbands' long life, good health, and a happy married life. They break their fast after ritually worshipping the Vat Vriksha (banyan tree).

What is the puja timing?

The best time for worship on Vat Savitri Vrat is from 7:12 am to 8:24 am. Puja is also performed during the Abhijit Muhurta, which is from 11:50 am to 12:45 pm.

Is there any yog?

This year, the Vat Savitri fast, along with Shani Jayanti, is creating Saubhagya Yog and Shobhan Yoga. Furthermore, the planetary positions are creating Raja Yog like Budhaditya, Navapancham, Gajalakshmi, and Vipreet Raja Yog.

Why is the Banyan tree worshipped?

The banyan tree is considered extremely sacred and divine in Hinduism. It is believed that Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, and Goddess Savitri reside within this tree. This tree is long-lived, and therefore considered a symbol of longevity, stability, and strength. 

Along with its religious significance, this tree is also given special importance from the perspective of environmental protection.

What is the worship method?

  • Take a bath in the morning and vow to observe a waterless fast. Install idols of Savitri, Satyavan, and Yamraj under the banyan tree. (If this is not possible, meditate mentally.)
  • Offer water at the root of the banyan tree and worship it with flowers, incense, and sweets.
  • Take thread and circumambulate the banyan tree and wrap it around the trunk. Circumambulate at least seven times.
  • Listen or read the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
  • Give soaked gram, clothes, and some money to your mother-in-law and seek her blessings
  • Finally, break the fast by consuming seven chickpeas and a bud from the banyan tree.
