Kolkata: The results of West Bengal elections have completely changed the atmosphere of politics in the state. While BJP seems to be coming very close to power for the first time, Mamata Banerjee seems to be in no mood to accept defeat yet. She has said that it would be too early to reach any conclusion before the official process is over. On the other hand, Trinamool Congress is continuously raising questions regarding the voter list and counting process, due to which the political tension has increased further.

Why is Mamata angry?

Mamata Banerjee says that complaints have been received regarding counting at many places. She allege that things like stopping the counting of votes came to light at some centers and names of many voters were found missing from the list. She has also asked her workers not to leave the counting center and stay till the last round.

Are questions raised on the election commission also?

Questions are also being raised on the role of the Election Commission from the Trinamool Congress side. Party leaders say that the election process was not completely fair. However, the Commission has rejected these allegations and said that all the steps have been done as per the prescribed rules and there was no irregularity anywhere.

What did the Election Commission officials say?

Rejecting Mamata Banerjee's allegations, the Election Commission said that the entire vote counting process was conducted under fixed rules and monitoring. According to officials, where objections came from the candidates, the counting was stopped for some time, but later it was resumed as per the rules. The Commission also made it clear that CCTV surveillance continued throughout the time and there is no truth in the claims of any kind of push or pressure.

What is BJP doing now?

On the other hand, BJP seems very excited about the victory. A round of meetings has started within the party regarding government formation. Discussions are also intense regarding the meeting of the legislative party and the name of the chief minister. Party leaders claim that Bengal has voted in favor of change this time.

Can Mamata still remain the chief minister?

Constitutionally speaking, the current chief minister can continue on the post until the new government takes oath. This is the reason why Mamata Banerjee has not resigned yet. Political experts are also considering this as a normal process.

Can political tension increase?

The way allegations and counter-allegations have increased after the election results, it is clear that the political atmosphere may become more heated in the coming days. BJP is calling it a historic mandate, while TMC is raising questions on the electoral process.

What will happen next now?

At present, all eyes are on the final formal results and the formation of the new government. After a long time, a picture of change of power seems to be emerging in Bengal and that is why the whole country is keeping an eye on this political development.
