Heatwave Relief Soon? IMD Reveals Southwest Monsoon Likely To Reach Keralam On May 26

New Delhi: The heatwave has become so intense that people are feeling the burn in the evening also. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department on Friday has announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to set in Keralam on May 26, which means it is five days ahead of the estimated schedule.  

When will the monsoon arrive?

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is expected to arrive in Keralam around May 26-27. The state typically witnesses the onset of the monsoon on June 1. However, this estimate is subject to a four-day variation.

The IMD on Friday said that the that the monsoon this year will possibly happen four-five days earlier 

Taking to X, IMD wrote that " This year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26." 

Why is arrival of monsoon in Keralam important?

The arrival of the monsoon in Keralam is considered a signal for the entire country, as this is where the monsoon officially begins. After this, the rains gradually spread across the country, usually covering the entire country by mid-July.

Can hope for relief amid heatwave?

Many parts of the country are currently experiencing intense heat. Temperatures in Rajasthan's Barmer have reached over 47 degrees Celsius. Heatwave alerts have been issued in several states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. In such a situation, the early arrival of the monsoon could bring significant relief.

How is the date of monsoon determined?

IMD has predicted that the monsoon is determined on a specific model that analyzes several factors, including wind patterns, ocean temperatures, radiation in the South China Sea, and temperatures in northwest India. This model has proven accurate almost every time over the past 20 years.
