5.1 Earthquake Strikes Assam, Authorities Report No Damage

Assam: Earthquake tremors were felt in the Morigaon district of Assam early on Monday. Its intensity was recorded at 5.1 on the Richter scale. According to officials, the shock occurred at around 4:17 in the morning.  At present, there has been no report of any casualty or damage to property. The administration is monitoring the situation, and further information will be shared if needed.

Where was the epicenter of the earthquake, and at what depth?

The epicenter of this earthquake was said to be on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River near the Morigaon district. Its center was about 50 kilometers below the ground, due to which the impact was felt in far-flung areas.

In which districts of Assam did people feel the tremors?

Apart from Morigaon, people also felt the tremors in districts like Kamrup Metro, Nagaon, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, Goalpara, and South Salmara-Mankachar. Along with this, tremors were also reported in Nalbari, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, and many other districts.

Was the impact seen outside Assam also?

The impact of the earthquake was not limited to Assam. The earthquake was also felt in some parts of Arunachal Pradesh, all of Meghalaya, and some areas of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal. According to reports, the tremors were felt as far as the border areas of Bhutan, Bangladesh, and China.

What was people's reaction?

People in many areas got scared due to the tremors that occurred early in the morning and came out of their homes. Although the tremors lasted only for a few seconds, people remained standing in open places for some time due to fear.

Is there news of any damage?

According to officials, at present no information has been received about loss of life or property. Light to moderate tremors were felt in parts of central Assam. The administration is keeping an eye on the situation and will provide further information if needed.
