Post-poll violence continues in West Bengal following the declaration of the Legislative Assembly election results. In the latest incident, the personal assistant of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot dead on Wednesday. He has been identified as Chandranath Rath. Meanwhile, another individual who was accompanying him sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and has been admitted to a nursing home. The injured person is currently undergoing treatment at the Vibacity Nursing Home, located at the Madhyamgram crossing. Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt for the killer. The incident has created an atmosphere of severe tension throughout the entire region.
It is reported that the deceased, Chandranath, had been associated with Suvendu Adhikari for the past 10 to 12 years and was considered to be one of his closest aides. Even during the recent elections, he was handling key responsibilities related to the campaign trail. Consequently, this murder is also being viewed through a political lens.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the police rushed to the scene, and an investigation has been initiated. Blockades have been set up across the area, and a manhunt for the attackers is currently underway. The police are scouring CCTV footage from the vicinity in an effort to identify and apprehend the culprits.
According to reports, Suvendu Adhikari's personal assistant was shot dead on a road in Madhyamgram. The deceased has been identified as Chandranath Rath. He had been serving as Suvendu Adhikari's personal assistant for a long time. It is alleged that on Wednesday night in Madhyamgram, a vehicle was surrounded, and multiple shots were fired at it in rapid succession.
It is reported that the car in which Chandranath Rath was traveling was struck by bullets in its front section, causing the windshield to shatter. Chandranath Rath was seated in the front seat of the car. The BJP claims that Chandranath sustained three gunshot wounds to the chest. He succumbed to his injuries due to excessive blood loss. He was returning home to Madhyamgram from Kolkata. The police and central forces have cordoned off the bullet-riddled vehicle.
While Chandranath Rath died from his gunshot wounds, the individual driving the car sustained injuries from the gunfire and has been admitted to a hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Vibacity Nursing Home, located at the Madhyamgram crossing.
All victorious BJP candidates have arrived at the scene of the incident. This attack on the Scorpio vehicle took place right along the National Highway. Several BJP MLAs were present at the spot at the time. These include Kaustav Bagchi, Piyush Kanadia, Shankar Ghosh, and Shankar Chatterjee. An atmosphere of severe tension prevails across the entire region. A large contingent of police, along with the RAF and central forces, has cordoned off the area.
Meanwhile, a total of 200 FIRs have been registered and 433 individuals arrested so far in Bengal in connection with incidents of post-poll violence. Director General of Police (DGP) Siddha Nath Gupta provided this information on Wednesday. The DGP stated that, in addition to the 433 arrests made on charges of direct involvement in cases of post-poll violence, 1,100 people have been taken into preventive custody to date. The DGP's statement comes a day after a directive from the Election Commission of India (ECI), in which the Commission instructed the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, the Director General of Police, and the CAPF deployed in the state to ensure a policy of 'zero tolerance' towards post-poll violence.
