New Delhi: The cricketing world has been left stunned by the passing of former Punjab fast bowler Amanpreet Gill. He bid farewell to the world at the age of 36. Reports suggest that he had been battling an illness for several months. Amanpreet had played Under-19 cricket alongside Virat Kohli. The death of his fellow cricketer has deeply shaken the legendary Kohli, who took to social media to express his grief. Kohli is currently playing in the 2026 IPL season. Amanpreet was part of the Punjab Kings squad (then known as Kings XI Punjab) in 2009 and 2010, though he did not get an opportunity to feature in the playing XI. Between 2006 and 2008, he played six First-Class matches and claimed 11 wickets.

What did Virat Kohli say about  Amanpreet's death?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batsman Kohli took to 'X' on Thursday to write: "Shocked and saddened to hear the news of Amanpreet Gill's passing. My prayers go out to his family and loved ones. May they find strength. May God grant peace to Amanpreet's soul. Om Shanti."

The news of Amanpreet's demise emerged on Wednesday. He was born on September 16, 1989. He was a member of the Indian Under-19 team during the mid-2000s. In July 2007, he toured Sri Lanka for an Under-19 Tri-Series; the third team in the series was Bangladesh. Playing alongside teammates like Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey, he claimed nine wickets across five matches in the series. Amanpreet delivered a brilliant spell in the final against Bangladesh in Colombo, taking two wickets for just 14 runs. The Indian Under-19 team went on to register a massive victory by a margin of 129 runs.

Amanpreet also served as a member of the Senior Selection Committee at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) during the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2022-23, and 2024-25 seasons. In a social media post, the PCA wrote: "The Punjab Cricket Association expresses its deep sorrow over the passing of former cricketer and member of the Senior Selection Committee (Punjab), Amanpreet Singh Gill. He served Punjab cricket with dedication and passion while representing teams such as India Under-19, Kings XI Punjab, and Punjab. Our deepest condolences go out to the grieving family and loved ones. May Waheguru grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to the family during this difficult time."

Punjab Kings also posted an Instagram Story to express their grief over his demise. The franchise wrote: "Deeply saddened by the passing of Amanpreet Singh Gill. He represented Punjab with pride. He was a part of the Punjab Kings family. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends." In their Instagram Story, alongside a photograph of Amanpreet, PBKS wrote: "Rest in Peace."
