Kolkata: A sudden fire broke out in Anandlok Hospital located in Salt Lake area on Tuesday morning. Within a short time, the smoke spread throughout the building and there was chaos among the patients and their families. The fire team reached the spot and immediately started relief work and the process of evacuating the hospital was started.
Suddenly smoke started filling inside the hospital. Many people got scared and ran outside. The staff quickly started taking out the patients. Patients whose condition was critical were brought on stretchers and wheelchairs and taken to ambulances.
More than 70 patients were taken out of the hospital. Some were sent to nearby hospitals, while others were kept at a safe place. It is a matter of relief that there was no news of any major loss.
According to information, the fire started from around the second floor. Some people are linking it to short circuit, but this has not been officially confirmed yet. The picture will be clear only after investigation.
As soon as the information was received, fire brigade vehicles reached the spot. First a few vehicles were installed, then the number was increased. Special attention was paid to preventing the fire from spreading so that the remaining parts remain safe.
The entire building was evacuated for security reasons. Every floor was checked to ensure that no one was left trapped inside. Electricity was also switched off as a precaution.
There have been incidents of fire in hospitals in the city before. Every time after such incidents, questions are raised on the security arrangements, but the situation does not seem to be changing much.
