New Delhi: The Leftist alliance has suffered a defeat in the Kerala Assembly elections. With this outcome, the Left no longer holds power in the government of any Indian state. Consequently, these election results have created a stir not only within India but also on the international stage. Now, a significant statement has emerged from the United States regarding the end of the Left parties' nearly six-decade-long dominance in Kerala and the resounding victory of the Congress-led UDF.
A US policy expert has praised Indian voters for this outcome—going so far as to label the American people as "fools."
Praising Indian voters, US policy analyst Mark Dubowitz remarked, "India has thrown out the Communists, whereas in America, this is not happening yet."
Reacting to the Kerala election results on the social media platform X, Mark Dubowitz wrote: "India is throwing Communists out of power, while America is electing them to its cities, states, and Congress. Yes, we are that stupid."
It is noteworthy that in the recently concluded assembly elections in Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged victorious. The UDF secured 102 out of the 140 seats, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was reduced to a mere 35 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP registered a win in 3 seats. With this mandate, the last remaining bastion of the Left has crumbled from the political map of India. For the first time in nearly 60 years, there is no Left-party government in power in any state across India.
Several senior leaders of the CPI(M)—including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan—faced stiff competition, and a number of ministers ended up losing their seats.
Experts believe that there are several reasons behind the decline of the Left in Kerala. The Left, which had long relied on subsidies and pensions to sustain its vote bank, has now failed. The youth today seek not merely government assistance, but rather economic growth, private investment, and job opportunities. Prior to this, in 2011, Mamata Banerjee brought an end to the Left's 34-year rule in Bengal. In 2018, the BJP ousted the Left from power in Tripura as well. Furthermore, in the context of the Lok Sabha, the Left Front—which had won 59 seats in 2004—has now been reduced to a mere 5 seats.
